A woman has been burnt to death in a horrible road accident involving a tank loaded with diesel. The tanker was said to have separated from the body of the main truck while it was still in motion, the tank rolled over a car with a single occupant, a woman, who remains unidentified at the time of this report. The accident happened on Wednesday in Ibadan, Oyo State.
Many were in tears as the charred remains of the woman was being pulled out from the wreckage, the accident involved a 33,000 litre-truck, carrying diesel to a filling station on Ologun-Eru Road.
Three vehicles and three buildings, including that of a former Commissioner for Environment in the state, were totally burnt.
The incident which happened about some minutes past 11am, had the woman as the only victim. She was burnt beyond recognition.
The rescue team, which comprises men from the Department of State Services, policemen, DSS, Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, tried without success to establish the woman’s identity.
An eyewitness disclosed ,that the tanker was ascending the hill when the driver suddenly lost control,
“and as the truck was coming down the hill the tank separated from the truck.”
The tank rolled over a wine-coloured Nissan Almera car and caught fire, the Nissan had one occupant, the woman.
The intensity of the fire reportedly made it difficult for rescuers to assist the woman trapped in the car The truck driver, who was said to be a very young man together with the motor boy fled the scene for fear of being lynched.
A church called ‘Save and Serve Ministries’ building was among buildings affected by the fire resulting from the accident. A Mazda car, marked Lagos LSR 208 EJ, which was parked in the ex-commissioner’s residence, was partly burnt.
